JILL BLISS - SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Untitled

what's the idea behind your plates?
nature studies + dots!

give the wurst visitors your favorite recipe.
ed's chunky pasta tomato sauce: put olive oil in the bottom of a pot on med. high, add chopped up onions and garlic, stir continually til onions are clearish. add a can of chunky tomatoes, artichoke hearts, peppers (green, red, yellow, whatever), and other veggies if you have them; salt, pepper, oregano, rosemary (any italian type spice will do).
simmer for about 20 minutes to half an hour. add chopped fresh basil and a splash of wine towards the end.
good on pasta and also mashed potatoes (sounds strange, tastes good!)

what contemporary artists are you inspired by?
it sounds cheesy, but i'm inspired by just about anything (someone's shirt, a building, a tree, a color), it doesn't have to be art. that being said, there's been many great pieces at the yerba buena center since i've lived here in sf!

last piece of art acquired?
a dot study drawing from my classmate sarrita hunn - amazing! i did a whole project based on dots last year, and i'm still obsessed with them!

tell the audience what movie/book/album/website/tv show/magazine you love that most people haven't seen/read/heard?
i'm addicted to japanese home improvement magazines from kinokuniya bookstore, like zakka!

schooled or self taught artist?
schooled, way too much school.

favorite place in your town?
the coastal trail in lincoln park. amazing views of the pacific and the bay, no matter the weather.

favorite place in the world?
home with ed and our dog, lucy.

any advice you can pass onto aspiring artists/designers?
good practical advice i've gotten from others worth passing on to aspiring full-time artists and designers:
1. when creating or choosing projects, (or just for life in general) don't worry about money or prestige: choose what you really want to do and work with the people you truly like. otherwise your life and your
work will never be your own and you'll end up unhappy.
2. get an unrelated dead end day job that at least pays the bills, preferably part time. this will allow you to devote yourself to #1.
