BWANA
SPOONS - PORTLAND, OR
"My Family"
what's the
idea behind your dolls?
The idea behind my dolls is a family of bears, all ready for the throwdown,
hiding massive weapons behind their backs. Fuck, that didn't work. No. The
idea is animals where the top of the doll is the tip of the animals snout,
like a manatee snout, and the bottom of the doll is the butthole. Shit. Ok,
that didn't work either. Ok, it's a nice family. No more prostitution, and
robbing quickymarts, now the family is old and retired, and lives happily with
their three dogs. These are special scratch and look dolls. Scratch off the
top layer of paint to find the other two layers of crap that didn't work.
red vines
or twizzlers?
All Licorice is good. Black licorice took me years, but now I am down. Rootbeer,
and watermelon are the best.
what contemporary
artists are you inspired by?
It seems I am seeing new stuff I like daily. Martin is
my studio buddy and I love his arts. Mat
Brinkman, and Marc
Bell..., Chris
Johanson, Shawn O'Dell, and the entire SF Mission movement is very inspiring.
I love Taiyo
Matsumoto, and my biggest art hero ever is Mizuki
Shigeru.
last piece
of art acquired?
Either a Mermaid or a Maori girl from Kelly
Tunstall.
tell the audience
what movie/book/album/website/tv > show/magazine you love > that
most people haven't seen/read/heard?
Green
Snake is a fantastical film. I haven't seen a better live show
than The
Imortal Lee County Killers in I don't know how long. 1-Up is
hands down the best zine I have read recently. Black
and White a painfully good comic by Taiyo.
how did you
get to where you are now?
Gentle feelings. Am I there yet?
favorite place
in your town?
My home, my studio, the waterfalls, the Hawthorne
bridge. Reading
Frenzy. Watching the finches eat up my sunflowers from my room.
favorite place
in the world?
I imagine living in a treehouse in South America watching tapirs and monkeys.
But I ain't never been there. Banyans
in Hilo are good.
i would not
be an artist if it were not for _______?
My friends and lady Spoons, my folks, and never giving up.
