what's the
idea behind your dolls?
Golems...or at least, my special interpretation of them.
red vines
or twizzlers?
Red Vines, of course! Twizzlers are the red-haired stepchild
of licorice. Plus you don't get as many pieces as you do in a box
of Red Vines. Twizzlers are always guaranteed soft and fresh, whereas
Red Vines can sometimes be tough and chewy--but if you get a good
box, nothing beats them!
what contemporary
artists are you inspired by?
Aw christ, that question? Hmmm...mostly people who are up
and coming like me or have recently established themselves, people
I know, people with whom it's all I can do to keep myself from
ripping them off because they're so damn good. But if you want
to be specific? Bwana Spoons, Saiman
Chow, Dalek, Tim
Biskup, George
Herriman and a shitload of cartoonists, a lot of Cartoon
Network shows.
last piece
of art acquired?
This awesome Time Traveler piece by Bwana. I don't remember
the title, unfortunately.
tell the
audience what movie/book/album/website/tv show/magazine you
love that most people haven't seen/read/heard?
Movie: The
Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowsky. You can only get it
bootlegged or on an old Japanese Laserdisc, so if you see a copy
for 20 bucks, nab it! My highest reccomendation. Also you chould
check out Sweet
Movie. Almost as bizarre as The Holy Mountain, but more political.
Book: Oh jeez...okay,
how about...The
Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinsky, The Ancient Architects by
L. Sprague DuCamp, and a whole lot of other ones I can't think
up.
Album: There's
a bunch...hmmm...maybe something by Kepone?
Any of the three I know of. They're all great. Plus, there's
this old single that Flipside put out years back, the Motor Morons.
They were actually a car club from the Midwest and made their
instruments out car parts and grinders and stuff--and sang about
cars. The Giraffes are cool too.
Website: Hell
if I know. My two year-old son really digs Mumbleboy.
TV Show: I
don't think I watch anything that anyone else hasn't watched
or has at least heard about, especially cartoons. Maybe "The
Kingdom" series by Lars Van Trier? It's kind of a soap opera
about a haunted hospital--absolutely riveting!
Magazine: Pencil
Fight, a creation by my pals Bwana Spoons and Patrick Fong--available
at your favorite small press stores now!
how did
you get to where you are now?
By friends who goaded me into pursuing this path, and also
by accident. Never mind the hard work thing, I mean, that's part
of it too. But I just go with the flow--the art thing was just
something I could already do, it just happened that the opportunity
came along for me to develop it into a career. And here I am.
favorite
place in your town?
My studio, TO-FU BROS. And The Republic for drinks. And anywhere
Portland Organic Wrestling has a show.
favorite
place in the world?
In bed with my girlfriend. 'Nuff said.
i would
not be an artist if it were not for _________ ?
...if it were not for the fact that I really don't know how
to do anything else very well. Well that and my friends, especially
Lynn Engstrom and Bwana Spoons.
