AARON DRAPLIN - PORTLAND, OR
"Things We Love"

how did you hear about gocco?
I heard about it in 1997 from this woman on an Native American reservation in Northeast Oregon. She was into making paper and alternative crafts and turned me on to the Gocco machine. I was forever hooked.

what do you like about gocco versus other mediums you work in?
What I love about Gocco is the instant tactile quality of ink hitting paper. In our digital age, it's very primal and takes you into the not-so-perfect world of screenprinting. There are errors, there are accidents, there are lines and ridges you can feel. 99 percent of the work I do involves sending projects off on a disc, to be printed somewhere far away and never to be seen again. Gocco is a chance to make something real.

do you have any gocco tips/tricks?
01. Always use the blue screen.
02. Respect your margins.
03. When finished with a plate, wrap it in saran wrap, and stow it away in the fridge. Sometimes you can use it again. You can always reuse the ink. Just let it warm back up to room temperature before messing with it.

what does love mean to you?
In my piece, I list all the little things that I love in my life. At a glance, I'm always fascinated by the itemized quality of a list, and, of a list all the little things that make up our lives. But this piece still feels a little too clerical for my definition of love.

Love to me is this weird, cosmic, fluttering, magnetic force that can bring a couple people together to share a first kiss. (Item #13) It's the tug that makes me miss my parents back in Michigan. (Item #29) It's the teardrop from a girlfriend seeing you off at the airport. It's the beauty of a young couple having a baby for the first time.

And, the way little Gary will lay his head on my shoulder after a long day, is pure love. He has stole my heart.

If I've learned anything, it's all we need to keep going.

what contemporary artists are you inspired by?
Evan Hecox, Chris Ware, Ed Ruscha, Hatch Show Print, CSA Archive, Todd Piper-Hauswirth, Art Chantry, Winsor McCay, Daniel Clowes, Chip Kidd, Kurt Halsey, Ryno Simonson and PJ Chmiel.

Movie; "American Movie" featuring Mark Borchardt and Mike Schank.
Album: Anything by Portland's finest, Richmond Fontaine.

favorite place in your town?
Favorite place in Portland: The old La Luna club... because, during the years 1993-1998, I saw so many amazing bands there. It's symbolic of my new life out west, with friends I moved out with and new people I met out here. Highlight shows include: Jesus Lizard, Richmond Fontaine, Paw, Pavement, Boss Hog, Mike Watt, Red House Painters and Unwound.

favorite place in the world?
In the world? 01. Mom and dad's house in Michigan for supper. 02. Fall in Minneapolis. 03. A Portland summer night. 04. New Zealand 05. A day hammering around London. 06. A train station pretzel in Munich. 07. Dinner with the Fumagalli family in Colico, Italy. 08. October in New England. 09. Driving Michigan Avenue in Chicago. 10. Corn Palace, Mitchell, South Dakota.
